Every year I watch more and more of our beloved environment be destroyed.
Every year I tell myself that I'm going to do something about it.
This year, I'm going to make a difference.
For instance, did you know that 35 million acres of forest is destroyed every single year? That each hour, 3 species of animals, plants and other living things goes extinct? That we have currently lost a 1/5 of the planet's coral reefs, 1/3 of mangrove forests, and 1/2 of it's wetlands?
These kinds of facts and devastating statistics is something that people don't hear about everyday when they watch CNN or read the paper. But it's the kinds of information we need to hear and spread to all of those that will listen. I know I'm listening, are you?
My name is Melissa and I am an environmentalist. I'm a vegetarian and I'm a runner. I figured what better way to use my running that to spread the word about helping the environment.
I ran this race originally in 2003 when I graduated college, but due to a round of nasty tears in my calves, I was unable to complete it. But, I did use it as a way to advocate my cause for saving the Australian rainforests. I ran and raised money for an organization called TREAT (Trees for the Evelyn and Atherton Tablelands) whom I worked with to create travel corridors for the endangered Lumholtz Tree Kangaroo and several bird species. On my own, I was able to raise $1,000 AU after months of bugging my classmates and professors, but I'm hoping this time I can do more.
This year, I'm running the San Diego Rock n' Roll Marathon on June 5th. I have decided again to run for the environment, but instead of just one place, for the environmental world. I have been donating to WWF since I could write a check and hope that you can help me out in my goal to raise $3,000 for the organization. If you want to find out more about them, you can read about their visions (http://www.worldwildlife.org/who/Vision/index.html) and what they strive to do (http://www.worldwildlife.org/what/wherewework/index.html) throughout their website, along with helpful pages about specific animal species who desperately need our help.
If you live in or around the San Diego or Southern California area and would like to participate in the race with me please let me know. I'm forming a group to help lead this change for the environment! And don't be discouraged that it's just a marathon, there is also a 1/2 marathon and a two person marathon relay!
